Ontario Coalition of Indigenous Peoples Zone 9 Area Meeting
Thursday, March 30th 2021 at 7.30 pm via Zoom
Attended By,
At the Zoom Meeting in Attendance were Former Governor Tammy Cadue, Governor – OCIP Zone 9,
-And-
two other Zone 9 members, Elder Rolly.
The Zone 9 Governor gave formal Introductions and welcomed all the Guests.
Introductions by all members in attendance were given.
Decolonization: The action or process of a state withdrawing from a former colony – leaving it independent.
It is now used to talk about restorative justice through cultural, psychological, and economic freedom. In most countries, Indigenous people still don’t hold significant positions of power or self-determination.
Decolonization requires non-Indigenous Canadians to recognize and accept the reality of Canada’s colonial history, accept how that history paralyzed Indigenous Peoples, and how it continues to subjugate Indigenous Peoples
7:00pm to 7:05pm: Everybody is talking about the impacts of COVID-19 during the past year and the effects it is having, their experiences with the COVID shot and when they expect their next one, etc.
7:06pm: Tammy informed everybody that the OCIP/OCAP meeting is postponed till March 31st 2021 @ 7pm. The meeting will talk about forming a Non-profit organization, the plans for a conference meeting sometime in 2022.
7:10pm: Jess talked about if funding is approved, we can create groups for decolonization support and help.
7:11pm-7:20pm: Lis talked about the challenges we could face in regards to decolonization, especially those who had hard experiences and suffered from being taken away in the 60’s to boarding schools where they were trained to put their native heritage and history behind them.
From Jon’s thoughts: **we will need to create a group that the people can believe in, not just the people running it. A lot of times, groups and beliefs die quickly as a result of the group drifting away from its original purpose**
7:20pm: Elder Rolly: spoke online in a conference at Lake Head University. Inspire interest in bringing people together. Help create renewal of our Heritage. Mentioned a man named Isaac, good storyteller.
7:25pm: Jonathan – Spoke to my father, Ron Swain. He is interested in the Conference and thinks that will be a great opportunity to bring Indigenous people together. He can provide insight and help organize the event as we get closer to a date and location.
7:30pm: Tammy – Talked about starting fundraising projects with Lisa in regards to her skills in hand crafting, and other artistic wears.
7:35pm: Elder Rolly – Made the suggestion that down the road, everybody who lives in Canada should pay a royalty to First Nations to help establish their decolonization.
Then he brought up the history of living on his land, his learning experiences about Native Americans in the U.S. and Canada.
7:45pm: Meeting adjourned.
Next one will take place for April 6th 2021 @ 7:00pm.

We will need to be sponsored to help get incorporated.
There was a in-depth discussion by all in in Attendance about what they want from this Group.
The following was proposed:
Create a Vision Statement about our group, establish step by step goals for what our group is to become.
Focus on ways to promote the group: fundraisings, Facebook advertising, emails, twitter, etc. Reach out to family and friends to get the word out.
By Summer 2022, help establish a Weekend Conference for OCIP, OCAP, MNO, First Nations to all get together. Have it take place at a Hotel with Conference Rooms. The location doesn’t have to be in a major city.
Establish Language Classes to be widely available for everybody.
