Ontario Coalition of Indigenous Peoples (OCIP)

Representing the Rights of Metis, Non-Status, Status and Inuit Living off Reserve in Ontario

Social Media

The Ontario Coalition of Indigenous People (OCIP) is an incorporated, not–for- profit, membership based coalition formed to advocate for the rights and interests of Métis, Non-Status, Inuit and Off-Reserve status people living in urban, rural and remote areas throughout Ontario.

OCIP is designed to be a flexible, “bottom-up” community-based coalition that supports projects and priorities identified by local community members. The OCIP approach embodies innovation in government, given that community members participate in the decision making process alongside government members. The goal of OCIP is to implement programs and services that address the ever-increasing needs of its members. OCIP has implemented a governance structure that is geographically equal across the province of Ontario. The current Board of Governors consists of a President/Chief, Vice-Chief, Elder, Special Advisors, Youth Representative, and 9 Community Representatives or Governors.

OCIP was structured to help communities build on their successes and focus on broadening and strengthening partnerships across the province, as well as increasing the participation of members in each area. Community-based local solutions reflect local realities and needs and can form the basis of an appropriate and effective response. Building capacity within community based organizations at the local level, and developing partnerships within each community is among the objectives of OCIP.

OCIP officially became the recognized Ontario affiliate of the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples in November, 2007, when delegates of the Congress’ Annual General Assembly unanimously ratified OCIP’s application for recognition as the Ontario affiliate of the Congress.

Collaboration continues to be the driving force behind OCIP, with 23 affiliate community organizations or 9 Regions throughout Ontario. With partnerships being solidified and a strategic plan being developed that will provide long-term solutions to address the needs of Indigenous Peoples across Ontario

From Elder Jim Smith,"As we begin this fine day, I’d like to use this day to honour the life of an excellent very good friend and individual. This great gentleman led our musical group, the Messengers. This group was made up of excellent musicians, not counting myself, and we had a lot of really good laughing times and fellowship over the years. Six years ago today, we were playing in an auditorium filled with over a hundred people who loved music. After our eleventh song, he turned to us guys and said “well done fellows,” and he keeled over and passed away. I will never forget that day. I truly believe that this man was called home to play for our Great Creator. He was an excellent guitar player and a dynamic singer. I had the great privilege of performing his funeral service. Although many of his followers believe that this was a great injustice, to take his life. But we all have this destiny at some point in time, to meet our Great Creator in the sky. One day we will get our old group together in heaven. What a day that will be, playing in front of our Creator and all of our ancestors. In many ways I can’t wait for that great event, to play in front of such an audience, as never before. Wow what a moment that will be. I realize that not everyone will agree with me. However, life on mother earth is just what we make of it. Some will get caught up in the land mines of life. Others will follow our Creator, Father’s footsteps throughout life. Certainly the choice is in our hands and we elect, for the most part, the way we will live. As I have said before, this is called “Free Will” that you and I have at our fingertips, to direct our way we desire to live. I myself elected my direction many years ago. My grandmother taught me about our Great Creator and what a friend He has been for me. Certainly, I have tried to guide my forward directions myself. But as I found out, my plans and directions led me into trouble, that I never wanted nor did I enjoy being in. Life has taught me that I am not a good director when I follow my own plans and directions. I turn back to the One who gives me His sustain rich grace too live by. This gift of grace or any gifts are His underserving favour towards me, as well as His underserving love towards me. What more could I ask for? Plus, He doesn’t give me what I deserve and I can never take any credit away from Him. Grace is about a relationship with Him. My grandmother certainly was on the right path of life and she introduced me to the greatest friend that I could ever find. He inspired me to have compassion and love, for serving other people on my journey of life. Anyone can obtain His loving grace or gifts and it costs you and I nothing, it is a trophy gift. Money can’t buy His grace, it is a free gift that is available to everyone who desires it. Many times we ask “WHY” are my needs not being met or my desires not being fulfilled in my life? We listen to other people instead of taking our problems too Him and prepare for His response. Make our decisions based on His responses and not just on money. His grace ignites our strength to keep going and not to looking back or give up. We need to obey Him and leave all the consequences too Him. For those doubters, try seeking Him too help you in those difficult decisions and times in life. Meegwetch." … See MoreSee Less

We honour all the lives lost and those impacted by the discoveries of hundreds of unmarked graves on the grounds of residential schools, and recognize there is much work that needs to be done to truly move towards reconciliation.

Today is an opportunity to learn, listen, and reflect on the deep, enduring, and positive impact First Nations, Inuit, Métis, and Urban Indigenous peoples have on culture, community, environmental protection and more.
